CJ is a wildlife biologist and an outdoor writer for Bowhunter and North American Hunter magazines. Internet users can find CJ on the largest bowhunting web site at www.bowsite.com. He is also on the hunting advisory staffs of Scent-Lok, API Treestands and Realtree Camouflage. CJ has served on the Educational Review Committee for the National Rifle Association’s Whitetail Deer Hunter Clinic Program and is a featured seminar speaker on the NRA’s Great American Hunters Tour. In addition, he has worked on a Masters of Science degree in Wildlife Management at West Virginia University under Dr. David Samuel Conservation Editor for Bowhunter magazine). CJ also manages and guides on several quality deer management programs around the country.
All the scientific information presented during his talks are based on actual field research conducted by himself or other prominent wildlife biologists. CJ translates this biological information so everyone can understand and utilize the latest scientific results. Hunters that use these findings can readily adapt or modify their hunting techniques to harvest quality bucks. CJ’s seminars are data packed and will elevate even an experienced hunter’s savvy. Come prepared to take notes on what some people call a whole college course in “Advanced Deer Hunting 101”.

Originally established in December of 2004, Wildlife Encounters, LLC EXCLUSIVELY delivers the extremely popular Wildlife Encounters® environmental education and community outreach programs. Our unique messaging… focused on sharing awareness concerning issues affecting Animals – People –Earth. Please join us Saturday and Sunday all day for the kids petting farm and observable exotic wildlife and interact with a variety of animals, reptiles and birds. We will be putting on live animal shows Saturday at 11am, 1pm & 4pm and Sunday 10am, 12pm, and 2pm. The whole family will be fascinated!!
Ken Hamel grew up in Altoona Pennsylvania and has been a whitetail hunting fanatic since the age of 12. He has 30 years of experience hunting the North American whitetail deer, in fact in 10 consecutive deer seasons he harvested bucks scoring 130 to 189 7/8 inches on the Boone and Crockett Gross scale. He also has harvested three Giant Whitetails scoring over 170 inches, all on public land where anyone can hunt. Ken is a nationally known caller and hunter. His expertise in hunting the whitetail deer has allowed him to be successful in the many States and Canadian Provinces that he hunts. He has harvested over 100 whitetails in his lifetime, 70 percent of them being bucks. His knowledge on how to rattle in the big North American whitetail deer is second to none. He has rattled, called, and used scents in order to be successful time and time again. Come along and listen to Ken speak on how to help you understand how to rattle in those incredible big whitetails to your tree stand in your neck of the woods. Matt grew up in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont and lives there currently. He is an outdoorsman, runner, coach, writer, military veteran and Physical Therapist who is dedicated to helping hunters address the physical performance side of their outdoor pursuits. His background allows him to assist people of all fitness levels achieve their goals. He has had numerous adventures across northern New England, the Rocky Mountain west and many places in between. Matt is part of the Big Woods Bucks team and will be presenting his seminar called, Training to Track: Preparation for the Fall Hunting Season.
Capt. Matt Trombley
Capt. Matt is the owner of 3rd Alarm Charters & Guide Service and has grown up Fishing & Hunting the waters of Vermont & New York, guiding for over 10 yrs., the last seven as a USCG Licensed Master Captain. Matt is a National Pro-staffer for the Crestliner Boat Corp, Minn Kota, Humminbird & Cannon, The Daddy Mac Lure company, the Silent Predator and Stormr clothing companies, as well as Vermont Field Sports of Middlebury Vermont. Matt offers trips year around on the waters of Lakes Champlain & Ontario as well as the Hudson and Salmon Rivers of New York.
The Big Woods Buck Team – Hal Blood
Master Maine Guide Hal Blood is a special breed of deer hunter. Hal has tracked thousands of bucks over his lifetime. By chasing that many bucks wherever they might be going, Hal has been able to unlock the mysterious life that a mature big woods buck leads. Hal has mastered the core fundamentals and woodsman skills needed to kill any game on this continent and his willingness to teach these fundamentals to help shorten their learning curve has helped hunters across America successfully and consistently pursue and kill game. Hal has written 3 books on the subject of hunting in the Big Woods. His most recent book is titled “Tracking Whitetail Bucks” is stories on the trail as he shoots 25 Bucks in the Big Woods.
A member of the Big Woods Buck Team, Mark Scheeren is an avid rifle hunter, who specializes in tracking and still-hunting big woods bucks and stand hunting when conditions warrant that tactic. He is an outdoor writer, a Team Member of Big Woods Bucks, and considers himself a hunter/conservationist. He spends most seasons hunting the Central Adirondacks, and the farmland around his home just south of the Adirondack Park. Mark’s favorite places to hunt are the New York mountains, Maine’s Northernmost Regions, and the Western portion of Montana. Mark is a lover of rifles, gunsmithing, and is an expert on ballistics and understanding the process of matching the rifle to the rifleman’s passion. He will be presenting his seminar titled The Tracker’s Rifle – A Seminar to Understand the Tracker’s Most Coveted Tool.
Have Your Trophy Officially Scored
The Vermont Big Game Trophy Club will be on hand with scorers representing the following clubs: MASTC, NHASTC, NBBC, P&Y, B&C and VBGTC. These nationally acclaimed scorers will be able to officially score any species of North American Big Game. The Vermont Big Game Trophy Club is a non-profit organization and utilizes a network of volunteer measures throughout the state to measure trophies and forward this information to the VBGTC offices for inclusion in their records keeping program. The Whitetails of North America Collection created by John LaBerge of Vergennes, Vermont includes many of the world’s most famous bucks. The collection currently includes over forty, spectacular whitetail typical and non-typical giants from across the continent. Hunting Dog Demonstrations
Terry is owner and president of Ugly Dog Hunting, a wingshooting and dog training supply company. Terry is a hunt test judge for the North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association and serves on the Ruffed Grouse Society board of directors. Nancy is an outdoor writer and photographer specializing in hunting dogs. She is creative director for Ugly Dog Hunting and serves on the Pheasants Forever board of directors. Passionate about wingshooting, dog training, and conservation, Nancy and Terry live in Hinesburg, Vermont. They have trained and hunted Labs, German wirehaired pointers, German shorthaired pointers, and one stubborn Chesapeake Bay Retriever. Terry currently owns two wirehairs, both NAVHDA Versatile Champions. Nancy owns two shorthairs – a NAVHDA Versatile Champion and a puppy, still very much a work in progress.
Lee Schanz & Joel Carvell
Lee is a Master Maine Guide and operates Schanz’s Guide Service with locations in Cornville and Pleasant Ridge, Maine. He has been guiding moose hunters for the last 17 years and has many trophy class bulls to his credit. His son, Stephen, has returned to their family business after five years of service in the U.S. Marine Corps. They are continuing the great tradition of guiding in their home state and are proud to be part of the “Big Woods” team.
Joel is a Master Maine Guide and has been guiding moose hunters in the north country of Maine for 17 years. He has helped many clients realize their dream of killing a trophy Maine moose. Joel started hunting partridge with his grandfather at age 10 and has mastered the art of hunting throughout his lifetime. His whole family hunts including his wife Kathy who shot a beautiful moose in Maine this year, his son Jacob who he has been training to become an expert tracker and his daughter Katie who loves to hunt partridge and deer with her Dad. Joel is proud to be a Big Woods Buck team member and hopes to contribute to their mission of helping others develop their woodsman skills by sharing his adventures. Lee and Joel will be presenting their popular seminar on Hunting Trophy Maine Moose.
2013 NWTF Roger Latham Award Winner! Joe’s Journey as a sportsman began at the age of 10 as he followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather and was fully entrenched in the outdoor scene by the age of 18. In 1976, while turkey hunting he met Dick Kirby who had just founded a company called Quaker Boy Game Calls. Ten years later, with much success and knowledge having been acquired by both men, Joe was asked to join the prestigious Quaker Boy Prostaff and thus another segment of his outdoor career had begun. Since that time Joe has traveled throughout the country producing outdoor videos, instructing at seminars and clinics, while at the same time honing his own skills along the way. Joe has pursued everything from Maine moose to Alabama mallards. His expertise as an “Over the Edge” turkey hunter is well known throughout the Northeast. He has appeared on the Quaker Boy Video Series and has assisted many celebrities and countless sportsmen in their turkey hunting adventures. He is a member of the RealTree Advisory Team and the Alpen Optics Pro-Staff and has served two terms as President of the Massachusetts State Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation. He writes an outdoor column and hosts his local cable TV show called On The Ridge. He is dedicated to the future of hunting, so please stop by and introduce yourself.
Bob Howe began hunting and trapping at age 10, he has a wealth of knowledge about the outdoors that astonishes people of all ages and levels of expertise!. He took his information about predators and the successful harvesting of them from a hunter’s view to a guides view when he became the owner of Pine Grove Lodge in 1998. His guests can attest that he gives them tips that nobody else ever thought of.

Bill Mares, raised in Texas, educated at Harvard, has been a reporter-photographer, state legislator and high school teacher. He has authored or co-authored 16 books on a variety of topics including beekeeping. He has kept bees for 45 years and has been president of both the Vermont Beekeepers Association and the Eastern Apicultural Society. With several others, he is writing a history of beekeeping in Vermont. An avid sportsman himself, he lives in Burlington. Bill will be putting on his seminar “Becoming a Beekeeper”, which will be an introduction for people interested in getting involved in the fun and rewarding art of beekeeping.
